What are Squirrels?

Squirrel Scouts are young girls and boys usually aged between four and six years old. They belong to the first and youngest Section in the Scouting family. Young people can join Squirrel Scouts in the three months leading up to their fourth birthday.

Easily recognised by their distinctive red sweatshirts, Squirrel Scouts enjoy making friends, playing games, going on visits and helping others. They usually meet together once a week in a Squirrel Scout Drey. The leaders are named after characters from the story “Friends of the Forest”. Children work towards a series of Challenge and Activity badges across the series of meetings and also at home. The highest award a Squirrel can earn is their Acorn Scout Award.

Wellesbourne Scouts Help Wanted!

Squirrel section Volunteer

Name: It could be you....

Role Description: Are you a whizz with glitter, paper plates and cookie dough? Do you love tell stories with funny voices and introducing children to new things they don’t get in school? Do you like walks in the woods and jumping in puddles? If you have reserves of patience for 4 and 6 year olds, have an active imagination and are keen to have a go and try new things - then you could be the person we are looking for. Help us please to preserve and grow Wellesbourne Beavers.

Why Hiring: We currently have 2 uniformed leaders and to run a Squirrel drey of 12 children it requires a staffing ratio of 1:4 plus the leader-in-charge. We would like to grow the Section as the waiting list and demand for Squirrel in Wellesbourne is huge.

They typical term for a Squirrl Leader is 2-3 years unless you have an especially keen wish to immortalise your own youth and stay on after your own children have moved to Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. You do not even need to have your own children. Maybe you were a former Scout or Guide and have finished your Apprenticeship or Uni, or perhaps you are retired or a primary school teacher in your day job. Often a Leader will move through the group too acquiring new skills and new opportunites as they progress.

No prior Scouting or Girl Guiding skills are especially required. You would be joining an established team and all training and support will be given.

Favourite Cake:  We can and do accommodate all dietry requirements. You don’t have to be a cake-eater but on camp it helps!

Please fill out form on the following page and we'll get back to you shortly.

Expression of Interest in Joining Form

When a space is available as soon as possible around their 4th birthday we will we get back in touch. We are very tight on spaces available and in our Admmissions Policy we give preference to Leaders children, Existing Member transferring from another Unit (eg. Parents moving house), Sibling already in the Group.

We are an inclusive organisation and will openly accept your child in discussion with you about how best to ensure their safety and enjoyment of the activities we plan. On Nights Away we can administer medications and we are all trained first aiders. We have had circumstances previously where a parent has joined too to be part of the leadership team. Every year HQ conducts a census and Wellesbourne does very well for accessability and equal opportunities.

Some badges your child can receive for their extra-curricular hobby. You can find the complete list of badges here with their requirements.

When your child joins we will organise your Squirrel jumper and also have it printed with their name to reduce the chances of it going missing.

Our Facebook page is “1st Wellesbourne Scout Group”. It is a closed group only for the parents of current members only. We use this page to post photographs from our activities, share news and communicate with parents.

School trousers and trainers when we are running around. Leggings in black or navy are ideal for the girls. You can also buy Scout Association navy blue cargo pants. School shorts are allowed in Summer, but not if we are in the woods with nettles and brambles. For Rememberance Sunday and other smart events then school shoes to be worn please.

There is a plan for every child to progress through from Squirrels to Beavers to Cubs and then on to Scouts.

Squirrels start at age 4 and swim up to Beavers on or around their 6th Birthday. We usually try and plan for friends to go up together.

The below link to the Scout Association has the complete list including products which support with Scout.org fundraising. You do not need all the brands but they give you an indication of ideal equipment to assemble as your child progresses to Scouts and Explorers. In Beavers the one recommended item to get right is to invest in your child’s sleeping bag so they are not cold.

Camping with Wellesbourne you do not need cutlery/plates/cups as we provide those.

Teddy for Squirrel is encouraged especially if it means your child will sleep, but please not special Teddy in case he has an accident or gets lost.
